It follows Rupert Campbell-Black and Tony Baddingham as they see their long-running rivalry coming to an end. Coincidentally, Aidan Turner has previously filmed at Chavenage House (a rival monastery). The same filming location was also used to depict Trenwith House in 2015.

Rivals stands out as an absolute high point

This has been a pretty mediocre year as far as TV is concerned. It’s a multi-layered work that definitely deserves a sequel. Conceptually a soap opera, narratively satire, and stylistically a period piece.

The contestants are entertaining, clever, silly and funny

The attentive viewer will suddenly discover a message that isn’t superficial or forced political idealism, but a search for truth. No episode feels sloppy, unnecessary or forced; the story and characters build beautifully towards a standout climax. The writing, the scenes, the lines and the direction all serve the greater good.

Every 80s kid loves the soundtrack

The acting is a joy to watch. The always excellent David Tennant shines as a humanized villain, contrasted by Alex Hassell. Victoria Smurfit and Aidan Turner make a believable, well-matched broken couple.

Highly recommended, the best performance of the fall

Viewers get to watch the rise of several new stars, especially the future of Bella Maclean.
