Following the events of The Batman (2022), Oz Cobb, aka the Penguin, creates a play to take control of Gotham’s underworld. From melting makeup to filming in freezing temperatures, Colin Farrell and Cristin Milioti talk about how they came up with their characters during production of The Penguin. Colin Farrell fought hard to get his version of The Penguin to smoke in The Batman (2022), but failed. For his own series, however, the character is portrayed as a casual tobacco user with a penchant for cigars.
The tone and atmosphere totally nailed it
An umbrella falls and the logo changes to the Warner Bros. logo. Featured in Graham Norton i gosti: Lady Gaga/Demi Moore/Colin Farrell/Richard Ayoade/Jack Savoretti (2024). Rough, grim and dark, but Farrell manages to capture that glimmer of charisma that Gandolfini’s Tony Soprano had.
Where to start with Pharrell?
There are similarities to Sopranos, particularly in tone. There’s a lot of grimness going down in that opening episode, but there are still some fun moments that fit the tone and don’t undermine it. Amazing is the right word. I love seeing talented star actors go all in in roles like this, and the makeup/CGI or whatever they did to turn him into a penguin not only passes the eye test, but looks incredibly realistic.
Pharrell is completely immersed in this role as an actor
If the makeup isn’t good enough, or is lacking a little, there’s always a risk of it being completely distracting. In Penguin, it adds to his performance and the overall quality of the show, because it’s a damn fine job. I may be a little biased as he was one of my favorite actors before this show, but I think this gives him the recognition he deserves. I never tune into new shows all at once as I like to watch all the episodes in one go, but I wanted to see how this one actually turns out.
I wasn’t disappointed, in fact I was surprised
