Next up is Im Schatten (2010)
12 years after his escape, the career criminal Trojan returns to Berlin. A valuable painting is about to be stolen in the city. But the meticulously planned heist soon gets out of hand.
It had me in the first 5 minutes when you only get action, no talking
I was quite reluctant to see this film that day, I thought it would be another dark noir experiment. But I love the actor Misel Maticevic and I had seen films by Thomas Arslan, although it was not the first edition of this triptych, Im Schatten (In the Shadow), so I went to the theater. I immediately found myself deeply involved in a classic masterpiece, a heist film, but quite different.
My only objection: just a little less driving would have been more
Generally, there is not much talking, but when it happens, it is perfect and to the point and gives you the background of the characters or moves the story forward. You expect violence in a heist gone wrong and indeed it is present, but rather implied by the words and results, the camera doesn’t expect it, so your imagination can fill in the gaps – all the more terrifying. There is a lot of driving, especially at night, through a rather gloomy cityscape, a completely different aspect of majestic Berlin.

Arslan for this wonderful piece of rigorous ethics in which not a single frame is wrong. And congratulations to the actors who are so good that you don’t forget a single face, even if it was only on screen for 2 minutes (the watch buyer, the old friend turns evil, the old friend turns legitimate). I can’t wait to see the third part of the trilogy that I read is in the works.
