Andy: The solution for a claustrophobic astronaut is to give him more space
Tale
While delving into the depths of an abandoned space station, a group of young space colonists come face to face with the most terrifying life form in the universe. Director Fede Alvarez explains the rule he set in Alien: Romulus that “if it can be practical, it will be practical,” he said, so the cast always acted opposite a physical representation of the xenomorph. Director Fede Alvarez sought out the special effects team from Alien 2 (1986) to work on the creatures. Physical sets, practical creatures, and miniatures were used whenever possible to aid in later visual effects work. When Rain turns off the ship’s gravity and shoots all the aliens, all their blood is suspended in the air in long, blurry patterns. Zero gravity in real life causes liquids to take on spherical shapes, not spread out in long, flat chunks like in the film. The 20th Century Studios fanfare freezes and becomes ominous, as in Alien 3 (1992), leading into the film’s opening scene.
okay, I guess?
The logo itself suffers a burst of static and it turns green. Featured on Nerdrotic: The Acolyte: Force is Female CONFIRMED? The Death of Movie Theaters – The Real BBC @MauLer @HeelvsBabyface (2024). Alien Theme Written by Jerry Goldsmith. A few hours into the theater and I’m not sure what to make of this. It was… It felt like Fedy Alvarez sifted through the production of each of the previous films, and every leftover idea from them was finally thrown onto the screen, along with a rehash of the franchise’s core components.
Been there, done that
You’ve got pieces of Alien, Aliens, Resurrection, and Prometheus/Covenant. For a fan of the series, there are subtle and not-so-subtle easter eggs every few minutes, from sound effects to reused dialogue. The plot is really simple, as it should be. A bunch of people exploring a space station. However, I really liked the use of temperature and gravity in this movie, they were something you don’t see much of in this universe. And there were plenty of jump scares. I’m not normally a fan of these, but they worked well this time around.
The world is great
The two lead actors were pretty good, the rest pretty forgettable. And I’m not sure what to make of one actor’s role beyond the grave… Forget the sleek, clean world of Prometheus, this is a throwback to the ugly retro-futuristic stuff of the 70s. Just lovely. Aesthetically pleasing, if you like this kind of look. Ultimately, though, it feels like this franchise really has nowhere to go in terms of story. I wouldn’t call it an artistic bankruptcy, but it’s close.
More standalone movies?
While this movie neatly tied together the “proper” aspects of the alien movies and the new Prometheus avoid it, it’s hard to think of what else to do with this creature. Almost all the mystery has been stripped away from the Xenomorph. I wonder: is there anything left to do with this creature? Whether they’re exploring the stars, escaping dystopias, or making the world a better place, these women are what sci-fi is all about.
