Married small-time criminals Lou-Jean (Goldie Hawn) and Clovis Poplin (William Atherton) lose their baby in the state of Texas and decide to do whatever it takes to get him back. Lou-Jean breaks Clovis out of jail and the two steal their son from his foster home, as well as taking a highway patrolman hostage. When a massive ring begins chasing them across Texas, the pair become folk heroes and even begin to bond with the captive cop.
