(Review is for the first two seasons only) I came into this show not expecting to like it, but the story, acting, and cinematography are brilliant. It’s basically Mafia Wars in Montana with occasional giant doses of testosterone (cowboys with guns on horseback while fishing)! Costner is a master actor in the lead role of the Duttons.
The show is at its best when it shows the chessboard moving according to the Duttons and their enemies
The show gets dark at the beginning of the second season, but starts to pick up again halfway through. Kelsey Asbille is the weakest link as Monica and plays a bad hand, the plot falters awkwardly and the acting just goes unnoticed. I think Cole Hauser as Rip might be the strongest actor (aside from Costner himself) and looked forward to every scene Rip was in.
Thomas Rainwater is also great
The story hums along and the scenery is beautiful. Much like Cormac McCarthy’s “All The Pretty Horses”; was a bit more raw and gritty than the title suggests, this show hits a similar note. I highly recommend it and wish I hadn’t waited so long to watch it.
